It is indeed difficult to reconcile Christianity, Buddhism and Marxism unless one does it at the higher platitude of the human spirit or soul or however you define the special quality that makes humanity transcend the animal biological state.

If however, and speaking in a very broad drift, the original sin of Adam as son-of-God was in acquiring a self-ego from temptation of the Tree of Knowledge is align with the Buddhist nirvanic liberation of no-self and no-ego and no soul and the Marxist ideal of universal equality in humanity - we all want the same share of food and shelter and essentials, like equal access to sunshine and the rain; we go beyond depravation and deprivation to extending mutual love and compassion.

"Prophets (or liberals like myself) are people who are upset with the status quo"? No. True prophets are people who speak the truth of God to the status quo and are concerned that people are separating themselves from God's laws. The people who don't want to listen to them are the people who want to continue in sin. False prophets (or liberals like Dr. Knitter) are those upset with the status quo who promote their own ideas of the world, hold themselves in high regard, and invent their own religion. The people who don't want to listen to them are the people who see that what is being said doesn't make sense. And Jesus might say to those false prophets, et co., not so "nicely": "Liars! Hypocrites!"

It's not compassionate to lead people astray, and the inaccurate commentary on this site about what the Church is proves Dr. Knitter is part of the problem.

I confess that I've slowly slid into Buddhism after decades of trying to reconcile what the Church has done and recently become.

Living in Phoenix (where the laity are now forbidden communion under the form of wine and the upwardly mobile bishop regularly excommunicates dissidents) has hastened my farewell to Rome.

I trust the teachings of Jesus, but fear Hans Kung may be too optimistic about this Church that would so displease the Teacher..

Still, I am so grateful to Paul Knitter for writings that are provocative but always compassionate.

I was a priest 25 years, and have been a family forensic psychologist for the past 20.I'm influenced by Zen friends and by Theravada periods in Thailand, but remain a total beginner. I blog daily about "Practical Buddhism" (www.practicalbuddhism.net), and have a more visual blog called "Living Small" (www.livingsmall.net).

I have two questions:

1) May I re-print this blog in my space (with proper attribution of course)? I've scheduled for a couple of days from now so I can pull it if you object.

2) Where were you when I was studying theology? I could have used a professor who thinks outside the doctrinal box.

mea culpa, Paul! I am familiar with the frenzy and the pleasure that I get out of what a friend of mine calls "my lovely iPhone"! Seductive, tantalizing, ubiquitous, seemingly omnipotent as well as omniscient....hmmm... what IS going on here!? love the quote from Commonweal!
